What software?

Post by eyzpick » Thu Jan 09, 2020 11:09 am

Phone, laptop, tv stuff etc, all here in house is Mac based.
But to rejoin the fun with you guys the gaming rig will be Windows based.
My last real pc build was during the upcoming of Windows XP :-O

So now the new rig is coming I know how to install windows and know to operate it (kind of).
The real question is, what software do I need, virusscanners or stuff like that.
The rig will be only used for gaming, all other (mostly unsecure pornsites) stuff will be handled with the Mac.

Advice needed !!!

For cloud storage, I use Office365 Home (this allows me to back up my documents, pictures etc to the cloud and you can share it with up to 5 people in the household). Don't buy direct from Microsoft, you'll get it cheaper from Amazon and using the code you'll save yourself a few quid.
For anti-virus, I use Bitdefender Total Security.

Super advice, Zealous!
The rig will be strictly and only used for gaming (that's the intent)
All other stuff will be done on the home apple stuff, what we are doing for years and years ;-)
Gonna take a look at the Bitdefender !!!

Aside from the obvious Steam/Origin/Discord, some smaller things that tend to get overlooked:

7zip - program for compressing/extracting many types of files (zip, rar, 7z...), for downloading obscure mods etc.
Notepad++ - great text editor for if you need to tweak config files
Malwarebytes - free anti-malware for getting rid of nasty stuff if the worst happens (doesn't do much actively though)
Lightshot - take screenshots that you can edit/share quickly, great if you need help with something or to help someone else, often easier to just take a pic instead of trying to explain with words
Core Temp - shows your CPU temperature, useful if you're worried about overheating
Chrome/Firefox - the default web browser on Windows (Edge) is a bit crap

And if you have an Nvidia GPU, GeForce Experience - you have to make an Nvidia account to use it :x but it does make graphics driver updates very simple. Also enables in-game overlays, Shadowplay/streaming capabilities and other cool stuff.

Hope this helps!

I use Windows defender, comes with windows therefore free, Nvidia experience also free if you using an Nvidia card, I started off with the free version of malwarebytes, but to upgrade to the full version, if you look around you can get it for £20per year , it runs in the background and I can't recommend anything better.

Edge Chromium comes with built in anti-trackers and you can add extensions from the Google Chrome store.
