Good? Bad?

Postby Age. on Sat Jan 30, 2010 7:01 pm

IF you've played the beta. What do you think?

Im undecided yet, i dont think the server i was on was brilliant in terms of ping and the few games that i played i had 30 deaths to 3 kills. However, there are good and bad points:

Good:
    Nice to be able to revive and be revived. Bringing back the teamwork!
    Nice graphics,
    Good mix of vehicles
    Nice effects,
    blowing up stuff is fun
    shooting down tree's is fun
    looks like there's lots of unlocks and weapon attachments (like COD)

Bad:
    Medic with LMG's? - that's stupid, you should have a more portable gun, a medic needs to be able to move fast....
    The Glare on sniper scopes is stupid, ugly and annoying
    Died ALOT (but that might be because im a noob,
    The choppers and tanks seem a little over powered at the moment. Being brand-new i only had an RPG or C4 and neither were much use :(
    Not enough weapons/extras (even on the list)
    Server browser is clunky.

I've played it extensively both friday night and saturday and got to the top level of the beta. In a nutshell:

The good:
Nice mix of weaponry and that some weapons are universal I.e Thompson M1a1
The sound effects and vision effects when you are hit or a tank round goes past your head are nothing short of brilliant.
The knifing has improved alot from 2142. Although this kinda makes dogtags obselete considering the ease in which you get them.
Things like the Engi AV rifles are alot more useful in this game for many purposes.
Differing ways to complete objectives like levelling a house to destroy an objective.
The revive hitmarkers are greatly refined from 2142.
Ability to have things like RDS on your gun.
Big variety of "Specialities." on your soldier.

The Bad:
Hitmarking is dramatically poor with snipers
Server / graphic lag issues (hopefully this is because of it being in beta phase)
NO PRONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
noobtubes don't have a set arming distance. Its like cod waw rifle grenade except you don't die.
LMG hitmarkers are the FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cant shoot through the gap in the shield on the heavy mg turret.
beginner SMG for the engi is dramatically op'ed.

I personally think this game is great, but for me I am new to the Battlefield genre so I can't compare it to things like 2142. I agree with all the good points from above nicely done lads, and Alpha is right about the visual effects.....After seeing a TOW missile fly past my left eat I literally had to change my underwear. Granted on the flip side there are some downers as Age and Alpha have mentioned, but all the things you guys have mentioned DiCE already know about and are working theses issues. And considering the quick turn around and patch to fix some issues after the first day, I reall do believe that DiCE are gonna do thier upmost best to make this game as close to perfect as they can. One thing I will say is that I've done alot of closed beta testing over the last decade, and I do think this is one the more ready beta's I've been part of. For the simple reason that myself, alpha, kiyono, jt, the satanic one, roboto, wolfandangel and smelly have literally played the game non stop for hours since the launch. Which to me does say something really good about the beta, since all we do is play the same map and gametype all day..........and the reason why?

Well it's just so much damn good fun, I mean usually for this amount of fun you'd normally have to pay an awful lot more money for (I'm sure a few of you know what I mean lol.) This is because the battlefield around you is so destructable which alters the way you take on the objectives, it never ends up looking the same way twice after the battle is over. You can tweak your kits to best suit your gameplay stlye, for example; you don't have to snipe as a recon, you could be a demolition suicide bomber and arm up with a shotgun and c4; the medics aren't restrictred to LMG's they can use the shotguns, as well as a few SMG's and Rifles (after some unlocks of course.) The squad is really as good to point that you can organise which squad members use what upgrades so that the whole squad can benefit from more than one, and for the most part we as =EBS= have been racking up the best squad pins and dominating servers (I'm sure the guys will back me up here, and I see even more now why people love the boat.)

Granted there are bad things like the weaponary and vehicles aren't balanced correctly yet, being that pistols are better the some Assualt rifles and the hitmarkers are a bit random. But this IS still a beta and that will change the balancing of weapons etc is normally one of the last things to be corrected (because they need us to play it, and say it's unbalanced), also we're only playing this in normal mode so in hardcore mode I'm sure this would also change that. The blur effect at first was annoying (I always dislike the blur effect in most games), but after tweaking the graphic settings the blur on the scope is more minimal now.

All in all though I do think this is a great beta that shows enough to get you wanting more, and once they iron out the problems this will be a truely awesome game. And I know that =EBS= originally started out in the BF series I really do hope that you all give it a chance, more then anything so I get to play with the non cod4 members :)

I agree with what has been said above, for a Beta it's pretty polished. I'm hoping that we can order the servers by name or latency etc in the finished version and the weapon balancing does need a lot more work.
Also the in game chat doesn't work yet and the friends system is completely hit and miss!

Overall though I'm finding it sweet. The Rush mode feels to me like a mix of COD and BF and things can get pretty frentic and I haven't got bored playing the same mode and map for the last two days so it looks very promising.

=EBS= squad play has been great and takes me back to the days I joined up ^_^

Here's a question for ya! You get to play a certain class and then modify the equipment etc right? How does that work?
I can imagine the sniper getting an smg or shotgun like mentioned, but what about the recon? Will he get the choice between using an elephant gun and a close range recon shotgun or something? Seems a bit vague to me. You're taking the special ability of the class and using this to make a class around him; like modifying an existing class in cod 4/6 or something right?

I'll try to answer this as best I can without giving away too many details. Basically when it comes to the unlockables, each of the 4 classes have their own set of items i.e. these would stay in the same mould as the default so essentially are upgrades. And then there is a set of about 15 or so unlockables which can be used by all 4 of the classes, and none of the 15 items are in the original class sets. So that means you basically have a choice of these 15 items to adapt the original 4 classes, I hope that makes some sense :)

Oh btw recon is the sniper and only sniper, hence how you can modify that class into a close combat with a shotgun which I have tried.....and is kinda fun. That's about all the details we can give away due to the NDA, not even the official site lists full details. But as it quotes on the website

'Play it your way'
Experiment and refine your ideal combat style with 4 character classes (medic, assault, recon and engineer), 15000+ kit variations, 46 weapons, 15 gadgets and 13 character specializations.

I leave it upto your imagination to what kit variations you can do.

There's NO Prone, the crouch key is anoying, the insane glare on the scopes, the way the graphics look washed out, no commander, only 4 classes, the spawn campers and the flaming bunny boys.

Oh yeah, forgot about the scope glare, that is annoying. I'm sure Jack said you can turn in of in a config file though. Crouch needs a toggle option, you're right Bill, my thumb is aching from holding in my mouse button 5 !!

Edit: You remove the scope glare (I think) in the settings.ini file. In Windows7 this is found here

C:\Users\{yourName}\Documents\BFBC2Beta\settings.ini - here's what's in it
[WindowSettings]
Width=1920
Height=1080
Fullscreen=true
RefreshRate=60
VSync=false
[Sound]
Quality=low
VoipEnable=true
[Graphics]
Effects=high
Soldiers=high
Vehicles=high
Overgrowth=high
Undergrowth=high
StaticObjects=high
Terrain=high
Shadows=high
Bloom=true
HSAO=false
MSAA=1
Water=high
MainQuality=custom
Texture=high
DxVersion=auto
Aniso=2
Detail=high

There is an option "Bloom=true" make it read "Bloom=false"

There is also another file in the same folder called GameSettings.ini, but I think everything in this can be changed from the in game options
