I decided to purchase the full version of malware bytes, and I'm happy with it.

Home users are fairly screwed now as the best AV out there will only stop around 80-85% of the malware out there.
Kaspersky and sophos are fairly good but the sort of protection you need now to stay safe is not available to home users.
Taran, if you are receiving email and browsing the web then you need working Antivirus. Watering hole attacks have increased massively over the last few years. You just have to browse a web page and you can get infected. A decent AV will stop the initial infection but if you scan after the infection then it may not find it.

emails are done through private server, and browsing done with knowledge of this,

have backups in place, pretty much all data on clouds as well and work on the philosophy, the gradual slowdown in hours is nothing compared to the recovery, but I am sure your right.

I have a major client recently whos mac became infected and truly ruined months of his work, because he thought that macs are immune..dolt

We've had 2 machines already this year that the AV was reporting no issues. When we put the hard drives in our sheepdip system (Linux boot) so the OS on the disk wasn't running, the sheepdip AV system found malware on both drives and a root kit on one.

Mac users can be pillock when it comes to AV and security. Am having that fight right now with two directors and four general managers!

Well, Im actually working with kaspersky (I implement their solutions on enterprises), and have to say that their AV engine its very good both enterprise and home, and now you have a free version https://www.kaspersky.com/free-antiviru ... n_kl______ it has only an offer to upgrade to internet security at startup, then nothing. The other free ones I tryed, shitloads of ads. If you are going to buy it, I heared good things about Bitdefender (didn't tried that one), Eset (is very light) and Avira (this one is a bit paranoic).
