the "my favorite TV series" thread

Post by Luftwaffles » Wed Jul 29, 2020 11:36 pm

i do like me a bit of the old telly..well not literary but you get what i mean.

there is some fantastic shows out there for the bored mind to help pass time..if "telly" is your cup of tea.
iam going to start and shamefully advertise the best TV series ever produced (if crime,a quirky main character and good acting is your thing)
that series is called columbo!

used to watch it as a teen and although not altogether grasping the brilliance back then its a series i have come to love more and more in later years.
Columbo is about the interactions of a quirky lieutenant and the murder suspect. back then i guess the concept of the show was a new thing since you know the murderer and his or her reasoning right from the start. the show is all about the "dance" between cop and bad person. so you dont have to sit through 45 minutes of figuring out whodunnit. i dont want to give away too much but if you find a cop peeling an egg at a murder scene,a dog called dog and a shaggy old french car somewhat interesting i would really recommend having a browse through. there are 7 seasons in total. some of which you can watch for free, legally, here:
https://columbophile.com/view-full-columbo-episodes/

stephen spielberg kicked of his career producing several episodes and the series features alot of well known actors. well,70ies know actors really but some of them are considered to be the best actors from around the world.including,as the murderer:

donald pleasance
martin landau
dick van dyke
Patrick McGoohan
robert vaughn
the immortal ruth gordon
faye dunaway
louis jourdan
william shatner
leonard nimoy
hector elizondo
... to name a few
if you are just mildly into crime telly, give this one a try. dont be put off by the age of the show..because Columbo is a true and timeless classic.

other stuff i love
-star trek (picard is ze best captain ofc)
-game of thrones ( i know..i know..the conclusion wanst what we expected.still)
-american horror show
-the haunting of hill house
-bates motel
-norsemen (hilarious)
-american dad
-south park
-fawlty towers
-blackadder
-black book
-father ted
-Killinaskully
and alot more i cant remember :D

enough of me promoting what i like. what is your favorite show(s)?

Columbo was genius. There was never a detective show like it before and there hasn't been one since. Waffles is deadly accurate: it really wasn't a whodunit, because as stated, you witness the crime at the beginning of each episode, it was a "how on earth is he going to work this one out"! I hadn't considered trying to find the series' again, but I think I will now! Thanks for the reminder!

Some old shows that were amazing you say?
Some that I used to love watching with my dad was The Two Ronnie's, Porridge and Open All Hours. Dad's Army was also a great series to go and reminisce. Comedy of a different age now sadly

Great thread!

My favourites, in no particular order:
Justified (really good series about a US Marshall)
Game of Thrones (winter is coming)
Blue Bloods
Criminal Minds
Hawaii Five-0 (the new version not the old. They actually filmed on my campus a couple of times when lived/studied in Hawaii. Also literally shot in front of the apartment block i lived in my first semester  )
Brooklyn 99
Modern Family
The Office
Parks And Recreation
West Wing
Madam Secretary
Drive to Survive
Stranger things
Arn the knights Templar (not sure f this counts as a movie or a TV show since it has been released as both)

And probably a couple of other things I cant remember :P

Would add 'are you being served' and 'the rise and fall of reginald perrin' to those classics

Sidetracking into classic radio, there was 'Hancock's Half Hour' and of course the Goon Show which you can still listen to at http://goons.fabcat.org
